ONLINE TEACHING: A NEW NORM OF LEARNING

 Assalamualaikum everyone!

It has been quite a while since I updated my blog.

Movement Control Order (MCO) have been released last year since 10 Jun 2020 and replaced by Recovery MCO (RMCO). The strict rules related with movement of people to reduce the risk of Covid-19 spreading has been loosened when RMCO have been implemented.

However, since the Sabah State Election on 26 September 2020 Covid-19 cases has been rising tremendously from 100 cases until the recent no. have become 4 digits no. of cases. Daily no of 3000 cases reported have become our new norm. Due to the huge no. of Covid-19 cases, Malaysia Government have implement again the strict rules under MCO and worse the proclamation of State of Emergency has been announced by Prime Minister.

The effect of this announcement,  Ministry of Education (MOE) have announced the online Teaching and Learning (T&L) for all schools in all stages. This is a shock news among parents and teachers as well. There are teacher who are not tech-savvy facing problem in conducting the T&L. There are students who are come from unprivileged family facing problem in attending the class because unavailability of gadget, bad line coverage and lack of internet data to be in the class. However, there are teachers who try their best to study the best method on delivering the T&L online.

Sadly, there are few teachers who are teaching students by just giving students YouTube video related with the subject they taught. This has bring concern among the parents who are looking their children are not really learning if the teachers were teaching using that method.

As you can see this post is expressing the frustration of a lecturer on teacher online teaching method.
I am totally agree with the points stated in the post and it is not because I am a lecturer. I have asked some of my friends who are teachers in school and they admit it is a fact that some teachers are doing so. Even for a college and university students are having trouble in learning through that kind of method.

There are 3 points that I really like related with the post.

1. T&L should be given by recording a video. I have experience when I learning subject Emerging Technology in Education this semester with Ms. Aimi. It is really convenience for me to learn the lesson through video as I can rewind the video to see any part that I am missing and for certain point that I am not really understand I can repeat what my lecturer are teaching. During that class I was learning about Hot Potatoes Software. I am not sure I can us that software if I am learning through synchronous class.

My recommendation, for school students it is important for teachers to not make a video which is longer that 30 minutes. Every class should be deliver in a video which is less than 30 minutes. the another 30 minutes should be given to students to do exercise and activities. Besides, the video should be posted in YouTube. Why YouTube? Because YouTube video can be watch in different resolution and it helps students with less data to watch video in lower resolution.

2. Create a slide for the students based on text books. Any online teaching shall not be made without any slides presentation. The slide presentation shall be used as a teaching aids to help students have a better picture on the lessons that going to be learnt by students.

Beside that, teacher should buy a tablet or any good camera that can record any handwriting from the teachers to be used during teaching in class. Students can jot down the important notes based on what teacher writing in the whiteboard which can be replaced with tablet apps.

3. Include teacher picture inside the video. This require a good technical ability on computer and online technology. Teacher can include their picture inside the teaching video using software and apps like filmora, InShot, OBS Studio and many more. Students will learn better if they can see the picture or video which recorded the entire face of their teacher. In class students learn the lesson not just by listening what the teachers said. Students also learnt by observing the teaching style of a teacher.

As a conclusion, we can't blame teacher for the online class method they chose as we discussed above. We have to understand, teachers need some time to familiarize with the new norm of T&L. We can't compare teachers with lecturers as lecturers have been used this kind of teaching for quite some time.

In this time, we have to help each other in order to improve any issues for the sake of nation. Education is a crucial issue that need to be solve immediately. Late action in this situation will bring casualties for our children in term of education.
